Investigative Report of Chontia incident at  Jamalpur District, Bangladesh

Investigation conducted by Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) -Dhaka, Bangladesh on 26th of March,03

I, Rabindra Ghosh, of Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) - Dhaka Chapter, Bangladesh decided to visit the place of occurrence - Village Chontia at Jamalpur district on the basis of information published in the various dailies of Bangladesh and also to visit the victims of torture at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where two Hindu male and female victims had been admitted on 22nd of March, 2003 with multiple injury caused by some terrorists on 22nd of March, 2003 at 10 a.m.

On 25th March, 2003 at about 6 p.m. I have proceeded to Mymensingh district by Bus 160 kilometers from Dhaka and accordingly reached Mymensingh at about 10-30 p.m. First, I went to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and enquired about the victims 1) Paruli Rani Karmakar(45) and 2) Rupananda Karmakar (30) of Chontia Bazar at Jamalpur in the Emergency Cabin . After sometimes I was able to talk with Ms. Paruli Rani Karmakar in Female Ward No.10 and Uupananda Karmakar in Male Ward No.6.

I asked both the victims and their relatives, examined the medical reports and the injury inflicted upon them, took photographs of both the victims. Ms.Paruli Rani is not in a position to speak, as the injury inflicted upon her was fatal in nature. I saw a long stitch on the left abdomen of Paruli Rani and the Nurses on duty told me that the condition of the patient was very critical at the time of her admission and she is now going to be recovered soon. The other victim Uupananda Karmakar was also admitted in the Hospital in a very precarious condition and the cut injury on his neck by sharp weapon is completely visible and the stitch is so deep one can easily realize that the wound is due to severe assault with deadly weapon. The relatives present in the Hospital described us that the terrorists numbering 16 entered into the premises of Shymal Karmakar and attempted to kill Shymal and  Ms.Paruli Rani interrupted one of the terrorists -Mujibur Rahaman son of Late Indu of village Chontia  And said Mujibur Rahaman with his kirisch" sharp weapon" slashed the left abdomen of Paruli Rani causing severe bleeding, sustained multiple injury on her body and heaty meal came out from the abdomen and she was taken to Jamalpur Medical College Hospital, but due to inadequate medical treatment both the victims were transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment. But the treatment given to the victims are inadequate and the victims are staying in the Hospital with a very unhygienic atmosphere. I stayed with the victims till 1 a.m. at night and went to."Jagat Bandhu Ashram" at Kali Bari, Mymensingh to stay at night there. I stayed in a room at "Jagat Bandhu Ashram" and Bandhu Sebak Brahmachary- the Sebayet of the said Ashram, in the next morning on 26th March,03, arranged for me a volunteer named Subrata Kumar Chanda -  a student of Mymensingh College who accompanied me up to the place of occurrence at Jamalpur.
